Normally, algae needs sunlight to provide the energy source for plant growth. However, in diesel fuel, the energy source for algae growth is the fuel itself. This explains the algae growth inside fuel tanks - a place where although there is an absence of light, basic plant life is able to thrive.
Algae control is difficult to achieve due to environmental constraints placed upon the toxic substances that could be used to prevent plant growth. Halogen materials such as chlorine compounds are too corrosive for internal combustion use. Metallic compounds like arsenide's are not desirable due to their intrinsic abrasive qualities.
